Hi! I´m using a little more PrePoMax, and noted that for every new model file and analysis launched, a warning message appear due to the fact that the same files are writed in the same folder… maybe this could be solved if a temporal folder with a randomized name is created in the specified work folder for every model file, so the “analysis1” files are in different folder for every model file, and no warning for the user, unles he re-solve the same analysis. This temporals folders should be deleted when the user close the model file or exit the program to avoid waste space.
Regards and thanks for this program, the work done for meshing with Gmsh is amazing!
Edit: Maybe a warning could be launched if the user close the model file without the option to store the results in the pmx file activated (because the results will be lost for the next sesion).
Well i do not share your point of view: i think it’s a good thing to overwrite the files if you rerun the same analysis; if you want to keep all results files, you just have to change the working directory in “Edit settings” + “calculix” + “Work directory”.
(you can also change directly the analysis name - right-click + "Edit … i’m pretty sure you know all about it)
Abaqus also just overwrites the files in your working directory (temp folder by default) if you run Job-1 again. But you can choose to not show this warning anymore:
Problem is that if for brand new user starting another project, always has this message appearing, is “another thing” to note or teach. Maybe if the Analysis were named by default with the same name as the Prepomax file this warning would not appear.
The default analysis is created when the first step in the model is added. If the model was previously saved to the file, the analysis will have the same name as the file. But if the model is not saved to a file there is no name to use when the analysis is created.
I often need to refer back to past analyses, so I always create a new directory for each project. By default I have set “Tools”-“Settings”-“Calculix”-“Use .pmx folder as work directory” to “Yes.” By doing this, the files are automatically written to the directory where my model and .pmx files are already stored. If I need to change and rerun the analysis, I just change the name of the analysis (from “Analysis 1”) and those files are also saved in the project directory with the new analysis name. If I need to clear space on my hard drive, I can delete the results from the .pmx file (they are stored there and in the .frd file). Or, if I will not need to refer to the analysis again, I can just delete the directory.
Problem with that is if you work with huge analysis (no lineal, impact…) results are too big (several Gb) and normally included in the Prepomax file, so duplicated and a waste of space. Not only that, there are lot of error, residuals, temporals files writted by CCX in the model folder, that is basicaly scratch, I preffer to have in the model folder only the Prepomax file, CAD geometry in step and very often in native or FreeCAD format as well, drawings, material data, test data, and FEA reports.
By the moment the best aproach (to me) is to save the Prepomax model right after importing the geometry to force the new name for the Analysis.
