I’m not aware on how the program is developed and what are the plans for the future, but can we start a Linux migration paid campaign ? I would like to support it!
I managed to run it on Linux using bottles with dotnet48 and allfonts based on this discussion.
Honestly, although desired, it seems not worth the huge effort considering the existing quite well working workarounds:
I believe it would be important, if the objective is to be the best opensource player, leaving windows dependencies seems to be the path to follow.
I don’t know how Matej sees this, but if that’s the objective, I’m sure the project will get a lot of support.
Right now I’m testing the options to run it on Linux, the most viable one is using the VM, seeing a lot of problems with the interface while trying to emulate it with wine and also some suddenly crashes.
That would be very hard and time-consuming to do. That is why I would not like (do not have time) to start down this path at the moment.
Good to hear from you Matej, have you ever planned to increase the development team? Im not a programmer, but I would not mind to support the project with a monthly support plan.
I did think about it, and help would be very welcome. But until now I did not really try hard to increase the team.
Dear all,
For information, I have setup a GitHub with simple instructions to run PrePoMax on Linux.
You will find it here: GitHub - jcugnoni/PrePoMax_on_Linux_with_wine: A set of instructions to install PrePoMax FEA software (a great Calculix prepost) on Linux using Wine
It is using Wine as an Appimage and thus is portable and independent on the Linux flavor.
The instructions are mostly about copy - pasting commands in a Shell but if there is an interest, it could be transformed to a simple automated install script.
I tried many different simulations ans it works great to be honest (except for the small annoyance of the tab characters showing in table widgets). So in my opinion it is better to focus on expanding PrePoMax overall than reworking it to run on Linux.
Cheers.
