The new PrePoMax changes the behaviour of the geometry based area selection. Now only the items entirely inside the selection rectangle are selected. That enables an easier selection of single edges and vertices:

That’s a nice improvement. Perhaps in the future box selection could work in both ways, depending on which way one drags the box (from left to right or opposite). This approach is common in CAD software.
