it seems since V2.4.4 importing .brep files does no longer work. I tested now with different parts and always get the error
Attached a simple .brep cube created in gmsh for testing purposes.

Using 2.4.4, I can import both your file and my cube created in FreeCAD:

Does STEP still work for you from the same location ?
Okay, thanks, problem solved. I had copied my settings.bin file from version 2.4.3 to 2.4.4, which caused this error. Replacing it with the original file fixed the problem.
Settings files get new options from time to time, so it is better to use the supplied file and modify the needed options.
