How to analyze simply supported hollow rectangular section with point load on it?

Hi everyone,

I am new to prepomax and I want to learn prepomax.

I want to analyze a simply supported beam with point load ?

How do I do it ?

Last time I tried to do that the entire beam was crushed

Maybe you could switch to FreeCAD FEM for that. It supports CalculiX’s beam elements so you could simply draw a line, assign box section to it, apply point load directly to some node and define simply-supported BCs.

With shell or solid elements used in PrePoMax it gets a bit more tricky because you have to apply point loads and simply supported BCs to lines (edges) or small surfaces.

Fof thin-walled profile you should use shell elements. You will need a partition (edge or small surface) where you want to apply the load (e.g., in the middle). For simply-supported beam (just not hollow one and with distributed load) see this tutorial: https://youtu.be/XMNVtqrb3is?is=UgtPeH7IhuHzt6wj

See this example:

Or with a different way of applying BCs:

The analytical result is around 0.02 mm.

Simply-supported box beam with point load.pmx (1.1 MB)

Simply-supported box beam with point load 2.pmx (1.1 MB)

thank you so much, I will check it out.

this can be happened for quadratic beam element (B32 or B32R) when point load or concentrated load place at mid nodes of element.

Or much more likely just: Don't apply concentrated force load to surfaces

probably, an option to assign individual nodes or total forces (distributed at each node) could be useful during this task.

Concentrated force load could indeed have a switch to distribute the total specified force. Then it would be like a surface traction load, but applicable to nodes, not element faces.
