.FEM format files?

Has anyone out there worked with .FEM format files exported from SESAM GeniE? I have been told it is a neutral format that can be opened by other programs including Abaqus but I can’t find any more info. It would appear to be not so neutral. It is a text file with nodes, elements etc as you would see in an input deck but isn’t in the same format as Abaqus/Calculix.

This format seems to be rather specific but maybe you could export to Nastran or universal (MED/UNV) format instead. Gmsh supports many import and export formats.
