Locations for setting boundary conditions

Hi!
Most of the time we do easy displacement calculations. Therefore we have to select a region where we apply our boundary conditions or loads. Often we just want to apply the boundary conditions to a portion of a surface, not the whole surface.
Today we make tiny protrutions (0,2mm), then apply the load to the protrusion.
This can lead to problems with meshing.
Is there a better way to do this?
Is there a function in CAD (we use Catia) to stencil out a portion of a surface?

Thanks for your tipps and tricks!

I use FreeCAD for that: FEM Geometry Preparation and Meshing - FreeCAD Documentation

But such partitions should be possible in other CAD software as well.

There is definitely a command for projecting a sketch or a surface to another surface. I know we used it in the past. I can’t remember the exact name.

In Creo exsists function divide surface

Partitioning a surface in CATIA might be tricky. I use the Disconnect (for solids) or Split (for shells) tools for that on the 3DExperience cloud version. The standalone CATIA should have at least the latter tool.

catia v5:
make a surface on the part on which BCs or LOADs should be placed.
Use in Part mode / Sew Surface (without Simplify geometry).

perfect, thanks, we will check the solution!

That is the one I was using.

Solution for CATIA

A Sketch on the surface that should be splittet is drawn.
Then use the command : “Verbindung trennen”

Now the surface is split and can be selected in prepomax
