Hi I am having trouble and can’t figure out what I have done wrong. I have a simple bolt pretension problem and no matter what I do the bolt gets longer rather than shorter (force or displacement)
I have checked the documentation and the demo video and I don’t see anything about this.

Did you define the boundary layer as shown in the tutorial ?
If you want to apply the actual load to the bolt (pressure in this case), you should do it in a subsequent analysis step in which the pretension will be fixed.
The first thing is that you do not have a coincident mesh. You meshed two bolt parts as separate parts and not as a compound part. Then you have to add a boundary layer of prismatic elements, as @FEAnalyst explained.
