Assistance with Specifying Deflection Behaviour

Hi all, I’m the student using PrePoMax in their final year research project. I’ve managed to model, mesh and run simulations with a full-scale model, but the deflection behaviour isn’t working as I intended so I think I may have set something up incorrectly. Below is a screenshot of my most recent simulation result.

In this model, I am simulating a rubber-and-steel-cord conveyor belt under tension and carrying a load resting on idler rollers. The intended behaviour is that the cords remain within the rubber matrix, and the belt lies on the rollers. However, from the photo it can be seen that the cords deflect outside of the rubber matrix, and the belt displaces through the rollers. For reference, I used tied contacts to define the interaction between the cords and the rubber, and hard contacts for the interactions between the belt and the rollers. Unfortunately my model files are too big for me to attach here.

Can you upload the .pmx file to some hosting website and share the link here ?

Hi @FEAnalyst, hopefully this link should work https://www.dropbox.com/t/Agtf8mcbOYGfUY14

I would replace tied contact with tie constraints. Then you should simplify the model for debugging - e.g. leave only one cord and one or a few selected rollers.

Since contact with the rollers is not working, it’s likely because of too coarse mesh. You have way too elongated elements of the sleeve:

So there are no nodes to engage in contact with the rollers. Or to sufficiently hold the cords.

You should add many more layers to the extruded mesh of the sleeve. Then you can also switch to linear elements.
