Surface groups after compounding a part?

I would guess there is no way to do this but I figured I should ask.

It would be very helpful if I could group surfaces in my models (for assigning properties for example) but as this is a large surface structural model I need to use a compounded part which naturally is going to remove any groupings.

It has been a while since I used Abaqus but I think you could make groups of elements and similar that could be hidden or shown etc.

You can create named Sets and Surfaces in the FE Model tab for use in analysis feature assignments. Abaqus has the same feature.
