Does PrePoMax can perform a powder-forming compaction project?

Dear researchers,
I hope you are doing well.

I need help with a simulation using PrePoMax software. Specifically, I want to simulate powder-forming compaction by importing particles (e.g. 200 particles) into a box and applying pressure with a punch to compact them. I need to define a general contact between the particles and the box walls as well as between the particles themselves. Can you please let me know if PrePoMax can handle this type of simulation? If not, do you know of any open-source software that can do this? Thanks!

hi, my previous discussion with another use material model instead i.e Drucker Prager w/o Cap by UMat or MFront later. However, actually i’m not familiar with these types of analyses related to limitation and assumptions. Another solver such OpenRadioss or OpenSees available when needed particle approach.

We discussed the topic of general contact in your previous thread. Regarding the type of simulation, it might indeed be better to use a different solver with more powerful explicit dynamics procedure. OpenRadioss might be a good choice but it doesn’t have a preprocessor so you would have to learn its syntax. For now, you may want to try a simple reduced model in CalculiX with just a few particles and see how it handles this kind of problems.

i can be misunderstood, particle finite element (PFEM) in OpenSees or SPH in OpenRadioss seems only applicable for hydro problems of case fluid structure interaction. So general contact have possibility but i guess will be poor in speed and performances.

Regular FEM is typically used for powder compaction simulations since DEM assumes rigid particles while SPH is meant for modeling of large deformations of continuum.

is there any paper related to modeling approach by particle and contacts, size and number could be interesting. I found many reported using material model rather than particle.

*edited: found several but limited number of particle, some use Abaqus explicit
